As proof that life continues to throw curve balls, a week ago today my Grandma Hedlund fell as she attempted to get up on her own at the nursing home. The fall caused a great turn of events and included 3 fractures in her pelvis. After multiple days in the Long Prairie Hospital, she was transported back to the Clarissa Care Center. She has moments of alertness.
I feel fortunate to spend time with her on Friday with our family. Bob, Emma, Joelle and I made the trip and spent our 5th wedding anniversary with Grandma. Moments we will cherish. Emma had a rough time at first, but slowly saw the glimpses of her great-grandma. As Bob noted, there's still a spark in her eyes. She knew us and when she didn't see Joelle right away, she asked "where's my girl" and when Joelle came in the room seconds later said "well there she is". That's the Grandma we know!
It is hard to see her struggling. This, after all, is the Grandma who never really showed her age. She was a Grandma on the move and always enjoyed coming to our events.
Now we enjoy each moment we have with her and enjoy the time we're getting to spend with family as we each arrive to spend time. We enjoyed visiting with my aunt and uncle, Dennis and Paula, and my aunt Alice who made the trip up to Clarissa from the Des Moines IA area. It was great to catch up and share some laughs. Grandma seems to enjoy listening to the conversation and being part of the commotion.
