What to Expect at a Rabbit Show...

While some of you may recall that I had a black mini-lop rabbit in high school (named Shadow), I never thought life would be bringing me to the East River Rabbit Breeders Association Rabbit Show in Sioux Falls.  And I'm pretty sure Bob NEVER saw this coming in his lifetime.

So, to help everyone get a glimpse into the Rabbit Show life, here's a very brief video and a short description of said show.


What to expect at a rabbit show?  Well first, you will meet some great and amazing people such as ourselves, Denise Crowley, Claire, Jarrod Smith, the Eids and many other cool people you get to meet, who have MANY more rabbits than our mere rabbitry of 3 plus 1.  Then, you will meet the others... those with only a couple of teeth, those wearing clothes 3 sizes too small, those that resemble well, their rabbits and those that seem to have more affection for their rabbits than for their spouse or children.  We tried to stick with the great and amazing people...

While Emma has participated in 4H Rabbit Shows, breeder shows are slightly different and this could take awhile to soak in. At a rabbit breeders show, while a high placement is fun and exciting, the bigger benefit is getting feedback from the judge on how your rabbit compares to the breed standards.  Each judge goes through each rabbit as he gives results of each class.  This is where you learn A LOT!  Most importantly, this gives you information on how you can better your rabbitry by determining what your buck or doe is strong in and where they are lacking, so you can select the right "mate" for your next litter.  

In our case AP, our doe, has narrow shoulders, but she's also near the top of the size scale for Holland Lops.  So, we'll look for a medium sized buck with a wide shoulder.  As for Kubel, our buck, well he just needs more growing time and then we'll bring him back for judging.  He's a bit on the small side and we'll give him more time before we make rash decisions.

So, that is a Rabbit Show... if ever attending one, bring a chair...

    Laura, We looked up the date for the show in Austin. I think it's the last weekend in March. We'll keep you posted. The doe we want to show will probably/hopefully have 2 week old kits at that point, so I don't know that Emma would be able to show her. We'll see how the bucks are doing...

Today.... The next chapter

And here we are... October of 2020. I'm not sure where the time has gone, while struggling between feeling it has gone too fast and yet being ready for things to move along and leave a few chapters in the past. To say that 2020 has tested our strength is a bit understated. But, even on our worst days and weeks - we have come out smiling.  Don't get me wrong, those smiles aren't always easy and sometimes they mask the exhaustion, the grief and the tears. And here we are in 2019!

I've gotten away from regularly writing, and with the start of 2019 I decided now is the time to revisit writing! It's a great way to look at events happening in our lives and remind ourselves of the blessings we have no matter how busy or complicated life gets! Part of 2019 includes returning to school work for me. As I look at my future goals for my career, I decided the time is now to look at getting my degree in Organizational Leadership.  I applied for admission to Metropolitan State University ( www.metrostate.edu ) and started courses in January! 1 week in and I'm already wondering why I thought this was a great idea. This first semester back at it will most likely be the most difficult as I'm taking on 3 courses - if I survive this, I'll be able to make this happen! Saying Goodbye

Saying goodbye is never easy, in fact it's one of the most difficult things to do.  Our strength is being tested today as we make the decision for Botti that means we have to put his needs before ours. I will never forget the day we drove to get Botti.  It was a complete surprise to Emma, a Minnesota spring day, March 2006.  She was grumpy about having to go to the Twin Cities with us, thinking it was about getting stuff for the store.  But then we pulled up to Petco in Eden Prairie, again she thought we were just picking up things for the cats and Rosie.  Then we got inside and met up with the animal shelter there for pet adoption day and asked to see the collie puppies we had inquired about.  That's when we met Botti and a few of his litter mates.  His eyes captured our hearts.  Emma's smile was priceless when we asked if we should bring him home. Botti hasn't had an easy road health-wise, but he made it clear that he would always watch over...
